EMF affecting Austism and other health issues globally! posted April 13/18

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

1)      Dr. Mercola has joined the board of the International Institute for Building-Biology & Ecology. This most likely will mean more on the topic of EMR, wireless radiation, etc in his newsletters. Also at this site is an article on the autism epidemic.

2)      People in the UK are concerned that the new LED street lights are causing major health problems.

The town facing a ‘humanitarian crisis’ caused by the radiation from state-of-the-art street lamps: Residents have endured insomnia, nose bleeds and even stillbirths, scientist claims

“Radiation given off by state-of-the-art street lamps is wreaking havoc on the residents of Gateshead.

According to local scientist Mark Steele, 58, people living in the area are experiencing symptoms of insomnia, nose bleeds and several women have even endured the horror of stillbirths since the introduction of LED lamps that emit 5G radiation.

In his circle alone, Mr Steele is aware of three women who have lost their children since the lights were installed in September 2016, with one giving birth to a deformed child that survived just three hours…

UK telecoms regulator Ofcom reportedly plans to launch 5G services, such as lamps and cell towers, throughout Britain by 2020. There are rumours Gateshead is taking part in a ‘secret Government trial’ by rolling out the technology in the borough before then.”

Many communities in BC have had LED streetlights installed. There is a problem with LED lights emitting blue light which interferes with melatonin production. If these lights have a wireless transmitter, we have additional reasons for concern.  ITRON’s newer smeters, the Riva model, has the capability of linking with the street lights. At this point I don’t know if the older models, which were initially installed in BC, are able to do that but will advise when I find out. Also, I don’t know if Hydro and FortisBC are replacing the older models with the newer Riva models. This too I am attempting to discover.  Let me know if you see LED street lights with antennae like those in photos in the article above.

Smart Street Lights

As more cities use LED Street lights to replace older lamps, they often don’t mention the Wireless Network that these new lamps often include now.  There are various brands out there and each work in a similar way, however ITRON, the maker of the Smart meters used here in British Columbia, seems to think that their smart meter network should be networked with the street lights.   The big question is Why?

“Municipalities will implement smart streetlights using sensors to monitor the environment, including lighting needs, traffic, smog, seismic and severe weather events, and to increase public safety.  Itron Riva™ technology does help efficiently and reliably communicate this sensor data over extensive mesh networks. Likewise, a utility or municipality’s streetlights can also be controlled using the same communication network (on/off/dimming), and the lamps can also be monitored for maintenance issues such as burned out bulbs or dayburners, allowing a utility to efficiently service streetlights.”

Many people sensitive to wireless say that this change would be unnecessary.   Street lights have been equipped with light detection for many years to turn each lamp off and on,  this did not require wireless.

3)      There is a lot of new information about EMR and about autism. There were articles a few days ago about men contributing the majority of  DNA defects that result in autism.  Please consider getting this information to doctors and parents, as well as those wanting to be parents.

April is Autism Awareness Month. 2012 Research Proved Cell Phone and WiFi Radiation Disrupts Brain Barrier, Causes It To Leak. No Safe Level Scientifically Determined for Kids or Pregnant Women.

In 2007, former software designer, author, and philanthropist, Peter Sullivan, founded Clear Light Ventures to raise awareness about the link between autism and wireless WiFi radiation.  Prior to working in high-tech, he was an Executive Officer and pilot in the United States Navy.

Dr. Toril Jelter is a Board Certified Pediatrician and General Practitioner in who treats children and adults with “Microwave Sickness” otherwise known as ElectroHyperSensitivity (EHS). In this video clip, she discusses how many of her autistic/ADHD patients improved dramatically after removing sources of wireless radiation and electrical pollution (Electrosmog) in their homes.  She also developed a 2-week calming behavior protocol for children with autism and ADHD.

Microwave Sickness” is now more commonly referred to as “ElectroSensitivity” (ES) or “ElectroHyperSensitivity” (EHS).  Symptoms vary and many doctors aren’t considering any of this as a cause or contributor to poor or worsening health issues.  Genetics don’t necessarily play a role.  Misdiagnosis is common.  Medication and meditation may lessen symptoms but they won’t cure the problem.

Maybe if more parents knew about this, they would demand that schools, libraries, doctors’ offices and hospitals be equipped with wired Internet instead of WiFi.  Having WiFi where large groups of children spend long periods of time isn’t healthy for them or anyone else.

Cancer concerns and rate increases with smart meters! posted April 9/18

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

1)   From Kate Kheel in the  US, a summary of what’s happening primarily with 5G . Kate’s website gathers info from many sources, including the update, and summarizes it well for many.

2)  Erin Brockovich has taken notice of the rash of glioblastoma cases in the small Florida community. Perhaps this will lead to publicity for EMR, which is the only known cause of this horrible cancer.

Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie Co. taking further action to address glioblastoma concerns

“WPTV has uncovered nearly 30 cases and counting of glioblastoma in St. Lucie County over a span of nearly five years…

St. Lucie County residents have also brought their concerns to the attention of Erin Brockovich.

She responded to WPTV, offering her thoughts and a resource for continued monitoring of local glioblastoma cases.”

3) A rant in Switzerland about EMR and Swiss Com saying microwave radiation is safe.  This despite in 2004 when SwissCom was applying for a new patent admitted that wifi is harmful. Look at pg. 2 of this application.

4)  Electricity bills that are many times higher than last year for the same period are being received by people all over the eastern US. And, of course, “it’s the cold weather” even in places where it was warmer this year than last year.  It would be very interesting to compare the number of complaints per year that were received before and after the smeters were installed.

Exorbitant power bills aren’t just a Maine thing

The Telegram discovers similar complaints across 22 states. An inquiry is underway, but finding answers has now gotten thornier.”

In Maine the initial finding is that the smeters are just fine. They have been taken for testing and all are just fine. Of course, once the smeter is removed from the base it resets to factory settings, but no one has mentioned that.

CMP says internal audit offers no explanation for spike in some customers’ energy bills

“The power delivery company says its billing and smart meter networks appear to be working well, but Maine’s public advocate isn’t satisfied…

CMP has tested 1,600 meters at the request of customers since January, four times the number it tested all last year, Herling said Friday. Only one meter was found to be working improperly, and it was an older mechanical model, not a new smart meter.”

5)   Way off topic.  A totally new horror having nothing to do with EMR, smeters or 5G.  Until a member sent this to me I had never heard of this atrocity. Days need to be 48 hours long to protests all the horrors being done to this world. Govt approved spraying of a probable human carcinogen to decimate large areas of fertile land for  the sake of timber companies.

Starving moose, burning forests and contaminated blueberries: a case for broadleaves and a new paradigm in Central British Columbia.”

Glyphosate is highly toxic to a wide variety of plant life, including broad leaf trees and shrubs, as well as flowering and fruit bearing plants, like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and Saskatoon berries.  This smorgasbord of vegetation serves as vital food for a wide range of wildlife, from bees and other insects to birds, beaver, moose and deer.  For example, aspen ecosystems provide habitat “for at least 55 species of mammals and 135 species of birds.”  However, after the grey death of spraying, this wildlife either dies from starvation or is forced to relocate.  In addition, the herbicide glyphosate, which is manufactured by the giant chemical corporation Monsanto, is highly toxic to a number of amphibians, insects and invertebrates.”

“The entire earth turns more and more into a huge laboratory in which we, depending on our attitude and profession, observe with eagerness or horror which global impact the mass use of chemicals, electromagnetic fields, genetically manipulated organisms will have – only we cannot clean up this laboratory quite as easily when we realize the experiment went wrong” (NEITZKE et al. 1994, p. 319).

Itron and Utilidata Launch a Grid Voltage Control ‘App’ for Next-Generation Smart Meters posted April 8/18

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

1)    ITRON’s new generation of smeters is better able to gather more data remotely and, perhaps, control more things, such as solar input. I will ask some technical people for their input about this new smeter and will share anything significant I learn.  I wonder if Hydro and Fortis will be spending more of our money to “upgrade” to these.  I doubt they will tell us.

Itron and Utilidata Launch a Grid Voltage Control ‘App’ for Next-Generation Smart Meters

But Itron’s OpenWay Riva platform, launched in 2014, was designed specifically to bring AMI up to the smartphone standard. Its new devices pack enough memory and processing power to support over-air upgrades and run multiple software packages simultaneously. They also run Cisco’s IOx networking software for distributed computing, based on the open-source Linux operating system — an environment that opens the roster of potential “app” providers from thousands to millions.

2)    An interesting interview with Barrie Trower, from the UK. The video (for the most part) has nothing to do with what Barrie is speaking about..

3)    Various US media, not the major ones as far as I am aware, are sharing and speaking about The Nation’s article about how industry is stifling and controlling information about cell phone safety. Isn’t it odd that no Canadian media has re-circulated this significant article?  .  Please, try to get some of these articles  (The Nation;s, Democracy Now, the On Point (NPR)) that were in last night’s update) published by your local newspapers, and perhaps even the major media outlets.  (the links follow this article in case you missed them).

The Nation recently published an article about cell phone safety which is being recirculated by other publications such as Democracy Now.

Yesterday NPR featured the article and topic for discussion during their On Point program.

Journalist Mark Hertsgaard, scientists, and activists discussed the “controversy” about whether or not cell phones and other wireless WiFi radiation-emitting devices are actually safe.  It basically summed up that all of us have been played the same way we were by Big Tobacco and Big Oil.”

To The Honorable John Horgan, Premier, BC

Honorable Andrew Weaver, Leader Green Party of BC

Dear Sirs:

Yet more information pours in regarding micro wave exposure and cancer. Please read below:

More information about how the NTP study was conducted and the review process by the peer review panel.  This panel arrived at a significant decision that THERE IS CLEAR EVIDENCE OF CARCINOGENCITY. This should change the way agencies like Health Canada and our provincial health authorities treat microwave radiation.  The precautionary principle is called for and we should demand that important steps be taken now, like putting labels on cell phones and removing wifi from schools and smeters from homes.

NTP cell phone studies — experts recommend elevated conclusions

The experts recommended that tumors in tissues surrounding nerves in the hearts of male rats, called malignant schwannomas, be reclassified from some evidence to clear evidence of carcinogenic activity…

NTP researchers also looked for noncancerous health effects in rats and mice. The panel agreed that there were increases in damage to brain tissue in exposed male and female rats, which further supported the classifications of cancerous effects in the brain.”

NTP cell phone studies — experts recommend elevated conclusions (Environmental Factor, April 2018)

An expert panel recommended the National Toxicology Program indicate stronger evidence that cell phone radiofrequency radiation caused tumors in rats.

Although I thank you both for the confirmation of receipt of my email which I know is coming, I would appreciate a reactions from you or better yet, some action on this growing problem. It’s a growing problem because Telecom corporations continue to inundate our streets with micro cells and cell towers continue to be erected.

Take this information seriously. This is going to create a burgeoning problem for our health care system and suffering for the population…. not to mention the ensuing law suits.

Dear Mayor and Council,

Here is more information regarding the growing concern over and resistance to the proliferation of micro wave emitting devices. At this point, if you decided to act on behalf of the citizens you are charged with protecting, you would be following an example already set in other regions with no fear of taking a leadership role in that direction. As I have said in previous emails, the concern and resistance to these devices is only growing.

In one community in Maryland people are fighting the installation of microcells in residential neighbourhoods. This youtube of a meeting this week shows members of the community presenting their concerns to council. At around min. 34 a member of Environmental Health Trust, Theodora Scarato speaks about the NTP review panel which she attended, and the Ramazzini report. This info needs to be provided to every city council because the public health of the community is the responsibility of local government.

Montgomery County Hearing on 5G Small Cells Near Homes April 2, 2018

Montgomery County residents fighting rezoning to allow new 5G cell towers

It is being called the next generation of wireless technology, but some residents in Montgomery County said new cell station equipment would come at a tremendous cost to the community.

One thing that was not discussed is that, according to Blake Levitt, industry will be using phased array antenna design to boost the power of the milliwave transmitters dramatically, allowing the waves to travel much farther and to penetrate everything much more efficiently. Here is an article by Arthur Firstenberg about this design – I’ve shared it before, in case it looks familiar.

5G – From Blankets To Bullets – Cellular Phone Task Force

by Arthur Firstenberg. The single most important fact about 5G that nobody is talking about is called “phased array.” It will totally change the way cell towers and cell phones are constructed and will transform the blanket of radiation which has enveloped our world for two decades into a million powerful beams whizzing by us at all times.

Some Media trying to expose the truth about EMF dangers Halleluiah! posted April 7/18

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

1)    Some media are trying to inform the public about the risk of EMR and the way industry is working to hide the truth from its customers.  Several excellent pieces that should be shared widely.

How the Wireless Industry Convinced the Public Cellphones Are Safe & Cherry-Picked Research on Risks   Part 1.  Video (59 min) and transcript

“Ninety-five out of every 100 American adults owns a cellphone today. And worldwide, three out of four adults now have cellphone access. The wireless industry is one of the fastest-growing on Earth, raking in annual sales of $440 billion in 2016. But are cellphones safe? A new investigation by The Nation suggests that’s a question that cellphone giants prefer you don’t ask. We speak with Mark Hertsgaard, The Nation’s environment correspondent and investigative editor. His report, co-authored with Mark Dowie, is headlined “How Big Wireless Made Us Think That Cell Phones Are Safe.””

How Big Wireless War-Gamed the Science on Risks, While Making Customers Addicted to Their Phones  Part 2. Video (20 min.)  and transcript.

“We continue our conversation with Mark Hertsgaard, The Nation’s environment correspondent and investigative editor, who co-authored a major new exposé, “How Big Wireless Made Us Think That Cell Phones Are Safe.” He discusses how wireless companies “war-gamed the science” by funding friendly studies and attacking critical ones; the potential dangers of the pending expansion of 5G with the “internet of things”; the role of the telecommunications industry officials turned federal regulators; and how companies deliberately addicted customers to this technology through the addition of social media.”

On Point on public radio really excellent interviews with Hertsgaard and Jerry Phillips, another researcher who has spoken out about his research. The interview audio  is at the top near the title. And the industry’s shameful, deceptive response is in the article.

The Connection between Cellphones and Cancer

Statement from CTIA, the wireless industry association:

“We were pleased to see this acknowledgement in the Nation’s article: ‘This article does not argue that cell phones and other wireless technologies are necessarily dangerous; that is a matter for scientists to decide.’ We agree. That’s why the wireless industry follows the guidance and regulations issued by the FDA, the FCC, and other experts when it comes to cellphones and health effects. Following numerous scientific studies conducted over several decades, the FCC, the FDA, the World Health Organization, the American Cancer Society and numerous other international and U.S. organizations and health experts continue to say that the scientific evidence shows no known health risk to humans due to the RF energy emitted by cellphones. The evidence includes analysis of official federal brain tumor statistics showing that since the introduction of cellphones in the mid-1980s, the rate of brain tumors in the United States has decreased.

In case you missed it last week when this was in an update, here is the article that was in The Nation, written by Hertsgaard and Dowie.

2)    Yesterday voters in a small town in Massachusetts voted down having wireless water smeters for many reasons (unfortunately health does not seem to be one of them) after voting for other significant environmental improvements. Wish we were given the right to vote on our environmental issues, including smeters.

“Voters declined to spend $1.3 million on a wireless water meter reading system but said Yes to every other motion before them before Annual Town Meeting which ended on Thursday night.

As a result, historic structures will be preserved and scenic places improved. The Planning Board will have a bit more control and flexibility in handling large projects.

ARTICLE 22 underscored Wayland’s commitment to fight climate change by emphasizing energy and carbon savings in new municipal building and renovation projects. Town Meeting supported the Energy and Climate Committee proposal 271 to 38.

ARTICLE 23 will provide $1.575 million to improve obsolete heating and cooling systems at the Town Building. The R22 refrigerant used for many years will be banned in 2020, so new equipment expected to last 15-20 years will save Wayland from paying high prices for remaining stocks of the chemical. Multiple heat pumps devoted to different zones in the building will also reduce the incidence of overheated or over-cooled rooms that had led to energy-wasting window opening by uncomfortable occupants.

But ARTICLE 24, Advanced Water Meter Reading Infrastructure, went down to defeat, 173-260. The $1.3 million project struck many voters as too advanced for their tastes. Among the arguments against installing a small gray plastic box on every customer’s house: We can read our meters now, so why pay for a wireless system; people who opt out of the wireless system would lose the right to seek abatements; data hacking concerns; the system is too high-end (instead of several antennas around town linked to the DPW, Sudbury uses a cheaper drive-by wireless system); money could be spent better on a second water storage tank.”

EMF Wifi dangers described in documentary Generation Zapped posted April 4/18

Inge’s Added Comment:  Because the rapidly expanding wireless technologies and their disastrous health and ecological consequences are such burning issues in terms of biological SURVIVAL, this is a documentary that I strongly recommend everyone watch.
Take advantage of the educational initiatives of the Health ACTION Network Society - our society that exists for the sole purpose of informing us of the important health challenges and environmental issues that affect our lives.

If you want to understand the political motivations behind this push to rapidly install these wireless technologies EVERYWHERE, I suggest that you read Jon Rappoport's most recent article  5G wireless: a ridiculous front for global control.

Please join us for the Vancouver premier of GENERATION ZAPPED.  The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring EMF experts, Milt Bowling and Farren Lander. For tickets click here.

“A wifi classroom is like the inside of a microwave oven set at very low power. Children are exposed to that wifi radiation six hours every school day, five days a week, and for several months during the year.” – Magda Havas, Associate Professor of Environmental and Resource Studies, Trent University, Canada

GENERATION ZAPPED investigates the potential dangers of prolonged exposure to Radio Frequencies (RF) from wireless technology; it’s effects on our health and well-being, as well as the health and development of our children. From its links to breast and brain cancer, to its associations with increased infertility and genetic mutations related to autism and ADHD, to newly developed illnesses, such as Electrical Hyper-Sensitivity (EHS).

So how can we uncover the facts and reduce our exposure to limit the associated health risks during this technological revolution? GENERATION ZAPPED attempts to do just that. shared by Inge Hanla cdsapi@telus.net

Deceiving public while testing harm on us all! posted April 2/18

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

1)    An excellent article by Patricia Burke regarding the history of industry and governments deceiving the public while they test their toxins on them.  Smeters and 5G are 2 of the most recent examples.

April Fools: Science Centers and Smart Meters and 5G “Small Cells” and Smokescreens Oh My!

“Dr. Martino’s research reveals how a complex system of organization deviance was engineered through specific mechanisms. In examining how groups can “successfully, systematically and purposefully impede meaningful information flow to an external audience in order to manipulate public opinion,” she provides tools for evaluating dynamics where critical analysis is lacking both within and beyond an organization.

The enduring value of Dr. Martino-Taylor’s work is that it is not necessary to speculate on the nature and covert goals of clandestine activity. It is only necessary to recognize when the techniques are in play. Dr. Martino-Taylor explains how various strategies are “used to regulate information in an effort to obfuscate, downplay, or deny damaging organization information.”

  • The narrative that the meters will give consumers more control over their energy usage has masked pricing, privacy, security, health, cost, green-washing, accuracy, and environmental issues.
  • The industry narrative that consumers are requiring faster and more powerful networks for 5G has obscured the requirement for massive densification of invasive antennas that will now encroach into residential areas, affecting property values and health.”

2)     A few times I’ve outlined the situation with telephones, with Telus, while “providing fiber optic cable”,  deceptively removing our landline, leaving us with service over the internet (VOIP)   I first learned about this when our electricity went out and after about an hour, our phone was dead. Our battery was faulty.

A member checked to see if she still had her old phone system or not and found out that she didn’t. She provided a summary of her conversation with Shaw, her provider. I believe Shaw can provide service only via the internet but having no backup for prolonged outages and emergencies is unacceptable as is removing the landline without fully informing the customer of the consequences.

“Summary re Shaw:

1)     Yes, we all have a battery inside our home/apartment and it will only last 8 hours in the case of a power outage

2)     I was told I would have to use my smart phone after that.

3)    I replied:  “I don’t have a dumb phone” (as an aside that is what I always call them privately or in public).

4)    I also replied:  “and if the grid goes down the cell towers will go down so can you understand how ridiculous your last statement was?”

5)    I then asked how I get more information, as I live in an apartment, about how I can add another battery backup.

6)    The response was:  “you have to go to one of our store fronts/kiosks in a mall and inquire as we have no info on the subject” and “no, they cannot be reached by phone”.

7)    I answered:  “ I am disabled, do not have a car and that is the best Shaw can do?”

8)    “yes, madam, it is”.

I phoned twice to speak to a different representative; both very young and neither could care less….same attitude and answers.

I believe that this is a dangerous system what can and will leave people without phone access. This was done without our permission or even being notified. Telephone service is regulated by CRTC and here is the link where info is provided about complaints. I intend to lodge one and to demand my old landline back. Please consider doing the same. If you make a complaint via the form, you can copy and paste it in an email to keep for your record and to share, if you wish.   https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/phone/plaint.htm#p4

3)    In France limitations are being imposed on the data a utility company can gather, and electrical companies gathering anything more than basic usage data needed for the monthly bill is ruled out. No more minute by minute data gethering allowed without permission.

France: CNIL’s notice to DIRECT ENERGIE on collection of smart meter data “indication of likely approach of DPAs post-GDPR

Mole noted, “[Further,] under Article 6 of the GDPR, the processing of personal data must have a legal basis […]. In this case, CNIL considered that the collection of personal data relating to the hourly consumption was not necessary for the performance of the contract entered into by the customer, which only requires the supply of electricity, billed on a monthly basis. As regards the legitimate interest pursued by the company, CNIL found that according to the information notice provided to customers, the collection of data relating to their hourly consumption would allow a more precise billing, ‘but that the automatic collection of this data, which is particularly intrusive and detrimental to their privacy, disregards their interests and rights, especially since there are no tariff offers based on their hourly consumption.’ For these reasons CNIL concluded that the processing had no legal basis, since it was not based on valid consent, and that other possible legal bases failed to apply.”

4)    Please see below a few of the questions submitted by an intervenor to BCUC regarding FortisBC’s application to do away with tier pricing. He has asked me to encourage people who are customers of FortisBC for electricity to write in to the Commission with a letter of comment, as the only group currently speaking to the Commission live on top of Anarchist Mountain outside Osoyoos and he is not sure BCUC will end up being friendly to low income and low use users of electricity.

Subject: Easter Surprise: FortisBC

Friday March 30th

1. 141 Information Requests and 11 Exhibits For FortisBC: Happy Easter

On Thursday March 29th, after some brief discussions with the BC Utilities the following was uploaded to their website:

I encourage you to read the 141 Information Requests I asked FortisBC on your behalf, such as:

1.10.7. Fortis Inc, parent company to FortisBC Inc, has consistently stated to its shareholders that it has a commitment to increase the value of the annual dividends by 6% (“Adjusted Earnings Per Share”, “Average annual dividend growth through 2022 targeted at – 6%”, “Post Tax Reform Rate Base”, 2017 Fourth Quarter, Earnings Conference Call, February 15, 2018 – pp 8, 9 &16). What is the customer cost impact of increasing long term debt as a means to maintain the high dividend payout ratio (>95%) on the formula by which residential customer rates, all rates, are set?

2.5.5. With reference to Schedule 6.3, if FortisBC is concerned about load growth in summer, why is the company not focusing its attention on the fact that Large Primary allocation is 53.7% higher in summer than winter, Commercial 29.1% and Small Commercial 12.4%, but FortisBC is instead focusing on residential power consumption which is actually 13.9% lower in summer?

I also encourage you to read the entire section 3:

3.2.6. Is FortisBC prepared to direct staff to stop the practice of raising Equal Plan Payment charges before reading the meter, thus ending the practice of raising Equal Payment Plan charges based on estimated consumption rather than actual customer consumption?

And finally:

8.3.1. Does FortisBC acknowledge that residential customer households, be they seniors, single persons on social assistance or disability assistance, and/or low income families in general (1 in 5 children in Kaslo live below the poverty line) with incomes of less than $20,000 per annum, who have to pay $224.34 per annum just to access the company’s electrical service, are financially challenged by any proposed rate design that increases the Basic Charge and the current tier 1 rate above the rate of inflation?

8.7. Does FortisBC acknowledge that consistent variances between electric utility pricing, in the West Kootenay, places home based businesses and micro-businesses at a considerable competitive disadvantage if the company’s electrical service rates are continually going higher and higher above the adjacent BC Hydro and Nelson Hydro rates for the same level of service?

Stay tuned we will see how many of the 141 Information Requests FortisBC is prepared to answer by the deadline of April 24th.

Definitive link that RF radiation causes cancer! posted Mar 29/18

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

1)    A national panel has concluded that the evidence is strong enough showing a relationship between RF radiation and cancer that even agencies like Health Canada cannot ignore it.

Can your cellphone cause cancer? Scientists find definitive link in study of rats.

Cellphone radio-frequency waves can be decisively linked to cancer in rats, according to a national science panel meeting in Research Triangle Park on Wednesday. The scientists’ finding establishes the clearest connection of cellphone risk to humans in a major U.S. study to date.

The scientists made their announcement at the end of a three-day meeting to review a $25 million rodent experiment conducted by the National Toxicology Center in RTP for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The draft of the study, issued in early February, had established a weak link in some cases, but the scientific advisory panel on Wednesday said the data is more compelling and indicates greater risk than initially acknowledged.

Wednesday’s decision is expected to change the debate over cellphone safety, and public health activists predict the results will increase pressure on federal agencies to issue safety warnings and tighten safety standards of the ubiquitous electronic device.

According to official data, Telus has a couple of microcells every 2 blocks, and these apparently reach more than 1 km in distance (why so many then?), then there are also several low cell towers on the Hollyburn apartments, and probably numerous others.

We do need to begin to take this proliferation seriously, given the marked increase in cancer seen in the UK and US. Is it also the case here in Canada?

Time for the precautionary principle!

Why Are Aggressive Brain Tumors On The Rise In England? How About USA?

MARCH 27, 2018

By Catherine J. Frompovich

“We found a sustained and highly significant increase in GBM throughout the 21 years and across all ages,” said Alasdair Philips, the lead author of the study, which has just been released online by the peer-reviewed, open access, Journal of Environmental and Public Health.

Brain Cancer rises with cell use ignored by Cancer society posted Mar 26/18

1)    Dr. Alasdair Philips and others gathered data from various resources and concluded that  rates of Glioblastoma, the most deadly form of brain cancer, is increasing significantly since the use of cell phone became common. The statistics are not being kept or monitored by any agency, just, as I suspect, as in Canada. According to the Cancer Society, the rates of cancer are going down so there is no evidence to be concerned about putting a radiating device to your head.  The reduction in total numbers is misleading. Cancers from smoking are decreasing rapidly which can and probably has hidden the increase in brain cancers when the numbers are combined. The question is why the Cancer Society is participating in this deception?  Who is keeping the statistics? Who is studying and reporting on them in Canada?

Aggressive Brain Tumors on the Rise in England

Rate of GBM More Than Doubled Between 1995 and 2015

“The incidence of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the deadliest type of brain tumor, more than doubled in England between 1995 and 2015, according to a new analysis of national statistics. During that time, the number of cases of GBM rose from 983 to 2,531.

“We found a sustained and highly significant increase in GBM throughout the 21 years and across all ages,” said Alasdair Philips, the lead author of the study, which has just been released online by the peer-reviewed, open access, Journal of Environmental and Public Health.

“The incidence rate of GBM, the most aggressive and quickly fatal brain tumor, is rising dramatically in England while the rates for lower grade tumors have decreased, masking this dramatic trend in the overall data,” Philips told Microwave News from his home in Beeswing in southern Scotland, not far from the English border.”

Here is a link to Philips’ study.  https://tinyurl.com/yarhddlz

2)    Dr. Magda Havas reviewed the 2 recent major studies, the NTP and the Ramazzini, and has explained the significance which should lead to a reclassification of microwave radiation.  Magda has a great sense of humor and I suspect the title is to get your attention.

Rats using cell phones are developing tumours!

The epidemiological studies are conducted under realistic conditions, using human subject (mostly) and show an association between an agent and an outcome. In this case the agent would be microwave radiation and the outcome would be cancer.

The in vivo studies are with living specimens (seldom humans) and are conducted in artificial, highly controlled environments and show a cause-effect relationship as only one parameters is altered at a time.

The in vitro studies (in glass) are similar to the in vivo studies but they look at cells, organelles, biochemical reactions, etc. and provide evidence for a mechanism.

When all three types of studies point in the same direction then we have more confidence in the results.

Each of these studies have their weaknesses and often when someone doesn’t like the results they focus on the inherent weakness in the type of study being performed (like … study was with rats not people; experiment was under artificial conditions; what happens in a test tube may not happen in a living organism; there could be confounders that were not considered; etc.)

The real value of the Ramazzini study is that it confirms the results in the NTP study as both showed an increase in two types of tumours Schwannomas of the heart and malignant glial brain tumours. We have additional evidence from epidemiological studies that these two types of tumours (various types of brain tumours) and schwannomas (in this case vestibular schwannomas that affect the ear rather than the heart) as an acoustic neuroma are higher in people who use cell phones. We also have scientific evidence showing that RFR causes an increase in free-radicals that can cause cancer; that it causes increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier, that it interferes with calcium biochemistry, etc. So, we have three types of studies pointing in the same direction. The tumours occur in humans under natural conditions; they occur in lab studies with rats at levels below existing international guidelines; and they occur in lab studies providing various mechanism (free-radical damage being only one probable cause).  See:  When theory and observation collide 2017.

Also, the NTP study is not the first but the second major study of microwave radiation and cancer in rats as the first one was conducted by Chou et al. in 1992. They found an increase in various tumours, especially primary tumours, for rats exposed to 2.4 GHz frequencies. It is the combination of studies that is important and all of these studies can’t be wrong!

3)    A comment on Magda’s comments, suggesting that the results of the NTP and Ramazinni studies were better than they would have been in a real life environment when exposures to other toxins exacerbate cancers and other diseases.

On March 23 2018, Kostoff, Ronald N <ronald.kostoff@pubpolicy.gatech.edu> http://dblp.uni-trier.de/pers/hd/k/Kostoff:Ronald_N=  https://www.semanticscholar.org/author/Ronald-N.-Kostoff/1724020 wrote

“Because of synergies, we need to take into account not only all EMF sources, but all other major toxic stimuli to which one is exposed.  My EMF book chapter on combinations of toxic stimuli including EMF shows that combined effects can be very different from effects of toxic stimuli taken in isolation.  So, if one function of RFR is to act as a promoter (the analog of a catalyst in chemical reactions), then the other toxic stimuli need to be included in any experiments to show the true damage potential of the RFR.

That’s one of the key problems I have with both the NTP and Ramazzini studies.  I think they under-estimate the real damage caused by RFR, and as I pointed out in the email this morning, could be used by the developers to show that their small cell towers will be operating at sufficiently low power levels to be safe.  That’s why I prefer the cell tower studies I referenced, and the epidemiological studies like those performed by Hardell.  They show the real damage possible, even given the limitations of such studies.  They also show the latencies of the effects; who knows what will happen in thirty/forty/fifty years after these combined exposures.  We are still in the infancy of large-scale RF exposures.  I address some issues like these in my recent monograph on preventing and reversing Alzheimer’s Disease (https://smartech.gatech.edu/handle/1853/59311

4)    A phone press conference, with several famous experts, about the Ramazzini Study.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9LLfFxJTVg   72 min.   The last half is a question and answer period.  Very interesting, especially after the first few minutes.

5)    A very proactive resistance group in Georgia. They managed to stop “smart” water meters based on the risk to health posed by RF.  They are still fighting the good fight against electric meters which are not mandated by law. The utility companies there pull the same stunts as they do here – threaten to shut power off, etc. It’s always good to make new contacts. Each of their successes gives us hope.

Subject: Scientists Warn of Serious Health Impacts of 5G

Re:  Scientist Warn Of 5G Health Impacts

Dear Minister Bains,

Since the Liberal Government announced that it will sink millions of taxpayers dollars into private for profit business ventures, involving 5G wireless networks, should this decision not be backed by independent health research first, as we are dealing with biologically untested technology?

In May of 2011, the World Health Organization/IARC classified all microwave radiation, a class 2B Carcinogen, no matter it’s source.  This cancer classification should raise many red flags for a government, who prides itself on “science based decision making”, instead of forging ahead and blindly accepting assurances of safety, by corporate telecom giants, and Canada’s internationally critiqued: “non protective” Safety Code 6.

More than 180 scientists and doctors from 35 countries, recommend a moratorium on the roll-out of the fifth generation, 5G, for telecommunication until potential hazards for human health and the environment have been fully investigated by scientists independent from industry.

Please view the 7 pages of signatures by doctors and scientist, following page 4.

More than 230 EMF scientists from 41 countries have expressed their “serious concerns” regarding the ubiquitous and increasing exposure to EMF generated by wireless devices already before the additional 5G roll-out.

After the scientists’ appeal was written in 2015, additional research convincingly confirmed serious health risks from RF-EMF fields from wireless technology.

The world’s largest study (25 million US dollar) National Toxicology Program (NTP), shows statistically significant increase in the incidence of brain and heart cancer in animals exposed to EMF below the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) guidelines followed by most countries.

The International Scientific Declaration on EHS & multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS)  – Brussels 2015,

declares: “In view of our present scientific knowledge, we thereby stress all national and international bodies and institutions…to recognize EHS and MCS as true medical conditions which acting as sentinel diseases may create a major public health concern in years to come worldwide i.e. in all the countries implementing unrestricted use of electromagnetic field-based wireless technologies and marketed chemical substances…

Inaction is a cost to society and is not an option anymore… we unanimously acknowledge this serious hazard to public health…that major primary prevention measures are adopted and prioritized, to face this worldwide pan-epidemic in perspective.”

Who will “benefit” when the health of Canadian’s and the environment will be adversely effected, by increased microwave radiation, emanating 24/7 from 5G microcells, placed everywhere, on top of 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, etc. already in place?

RF-EMF microwave radiation has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment, as insects, birds and amphibians are in a rapid decline, even in Canada, since the arrival of mass wireless communications.

I know many people, including my wife, whose lives have been greatly diminished by the relentless roll out of wireless technology.  Man-made radiation destroys peoples health and lives, and ultimately the environment, that we all rely on.

This should come as no surprise to anyone, considering that our bodies are bioelectric by nature.

If the claims of “science based decision making” by this Liberal Government carries any validity, it would be prudent to spend money on industry independent research, before sinking hundreds of million of dollars, into this ill conceived 5G corporate venture.

It is time to turn ‘green posturing’ by government officials, into concrete actions, by actively protecting the environment and the future of generations to come.

The public has a right to expect, that health takes priority, over any technological advancement or corporate profit!

China firm involved in endangering health of Canadians in Vancouver BC Canada! Posted Mar 25/18

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

1)    Canada and New Zealand are testing 5G, but the technology is far from ready for implementation. A pilot test in Vancouver was done in conjunction with the Chinese firm Huawei, a company about which security experts in various countries have raised concerns.  Telus has worked closely with Huawei, using their transmitters in the microcells installed outside homes. Very concerning and we must ask Horgan why this is being allowed.  What other components of our infrastructure, besides Site C,  are being designed, built and, perhaps, controlled by China?

Canada and New Zealand announce major 5G tests, but national service remains years off

As we reported in February, Canadian carrier Telus has been testing fixed 5G services in Vancouver using hardware from Chinese equipment provider Huawei; Bell Canada has also reportedly tested 5G in rural parts of the country. But major Canadian cities such as Toronto have not yet been promised consumer 5G service, nor has the Canadian government allocated key radio spectra needed for 5G services.

It’s also noteworthy that Canada’s ENCQOR announcement comes only days after three former Canadian national security agency heads urged the government to cut ties with Huawei. As The Globe and Mail reports, the three officials raised concerns over Chinese monitoring of network communications, mirroring issues previously identified in the U.S. and Australia. Current Canadian officials appear to be weighing the warnings without committing to anything.

2)    In Pennsylvania a judge ruled that a woman could not refuse a smeter because it is making her ill, accepting Peco’s rebuttal that RF was the problem. But he did acknowledge that something about the smeter is affecting her health.

Judge says Peco customer can relocate a smart meter, but not get rid of it

“A Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission administrative law judge has ruled that a New Hope customer who says a Peco smart meter made her sick can’t force the utility to replace the wireless device, but she can pay to move the equipment away from her house.

In a recommended decision posted Tuesday, the PUC hearing examiner, Darlene D. Heep, said that Peco had successfully rebutted Maria Povacz’s claims that radio waves from the meter had caused her health problems.

But the judge said, “The preponderance of the evidence does suggest that some other aspect of the Peco smart meters is inimitably perceptible by and contrary to the health and well-being of the individual, Ms. Povacz.””

3)    Yet another reason to avoid cell phones.  The director of a cancer institute warns that the light emitted by them could damage skim.

Cell phone dangers: Your smartphone could be damaging your skin

“But could the light your smartphone gives off be aging your skin?

“HEV is high energy visible light, which is also called blue light, or near UV light. Which is a type of light radiation that comes out of the cell phone,” Salner said.

Salner says that while there isn’t a lot of research on the aging effects of HEV light, in theory, it could be very damaging.

“HEV penetrates the skin a little bit more deeply, and that’s why some researchers have speculated that there may be injury to tissues below the skin’s surface. In the connective tissues for example, in the dermis, not the epidermis. That could lead potentially to wrinkling or skin injury. So it does penetrate a little more deeply, but we don’t yet have research to demonstrate that,” he said.”

Dear Mr. Wieringa,

The last time Hydro called to tell me I “must” accept a smart meter, I told the young lady that, because I am electro-hyper-sensitive due to mercury poisoning (courtesy of an unregulated professional exterminator who used a banned commercial fungicide to kill carpenters ants in my just-purchased first house), and I cannot tolerate wifi, cell phones, etc. in my vicinity, the only way I would accept a smart meter on my home is if and only if the installer brings three cyanide capsules, one for me and each of my dogs (one of my dogs has since died, so we need only two now).  WWII service men had the option of suicide rather than being tortured to death, and I want the same option.  Within an hour of ending that phone call, the RCMP were at my door asking if I was depressed.

I am absolutely not depressed.  I am angry.

When we went to court to fight for our right to keep our analogue meters, the judge threw out the case because our grounds were too broad.  However, she did say that we have the right NOT to be spied upon in our own homes, and to refuse anything that makes us sick in our own homes.

I’ve already paid out-of-pocket for

– repairing my house of carpenter ant damage (insurance doesn’t cover vermin)

– chelation therapy (not covered by MSP although on VIHA’s internal website, chelation is the only recognized treatment for heavy metal poisoning)

– rewiring my house to make it safer for me

– a $2,000 “Faraday cage” net around my bed to block microwave radiation just so I can sleep

– multitudes of vitamins and supplements to support chelation and my ongoing health

– naturopathic and functional medicine specialists

– mercury-amalgam free dentistry

– endless “reading” fees by Hydro, $32.50/month even though they only read the meter every two months

– Gordon Campbell’s hatred of HEU cost me 45% of my hours and wages, affecting all aspects of pension, Blue Cross, etc.

I do not qualify for BC Disability because my combined pensions (CPP Disability until age 65, OAS and MPP) came to more than $1,000 and BC would claw back anything over the BC Disability pension; they would not even accept my application because I “earn” too much, so I cannot go camping in provincial parts for free as can other disabled people; I do not get dental coverage (can’t afford Blue Cross’s dental anymore, so had to cancel that in Jan. 2017).

EHS  means I can’t tolerate most medical clinics, hospitals, libraries and other public buildings, and I have to carefully regulate my exposure or I’ll get sick.

With 5G and microcells on the way, I won’t even be safe inside my own home, except maybe in bed under my RF shield.

I am now 67 years old, broke and wondering how we got here, that Canadians are being slow-cooked by microwave radiation in the name of “progress.”  It’s not “just me” either:  every creature caught between “my” cell phone (I don’t have one) and the nearest cell tower is being cooked, confused and taken off-course because microwave radiation interferes with their ability to find home.  Think about that the next time you’re outside, pollinating your fruit and vegies with a Q-Tip–because we are definitely well on the way there.

Please, dump these smart meters.  They are not worth the money or health effects.

Dangers of 5G technologies posted Mar 24/18

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

1)    Below in letters is a very important one from someone who is very knowledgeable to those who are ultimately responsible for safeguarding the public and electrical safety. It was sent in hopes that these people would understand the shortcomings to do with smeter safety, testing and regulatory dysfunction that are identified.  The concerns are backed with testimony from a hearing conducted by the New Mexico PUC (attached)  regarding imposition of smeters on the public.

As we have seen in responses from BCUC and Hydro, significant design problems are overlooked or potential problem are not tested to ensure they will not cause fires. We are to believe and accept that ITRON is doing the testing honestly and well. Foxàhenhouse.  And where is the utility company in this? Where is its responsibility to ensure its equipment is safe?

2)    The Dark Side of the Internet of Things, and 5G presents how technology is being used today to gather data and how this will be expanded with 5G (5th Generation Technology).   I watched only the first 20 min to so. Seems especially relevant because of the recent disclosures about Facebook’s use of personal data.

3)    The IoT makes everything vulnerable from cars to ATM machines to pacemakers.

It Only Takes Seconds to Hack an ATM… Are Our Cars Just as Vulnerable?

The More Complex the System the More Vulnerable it is to Attack and Human Error

“Jack also hacked implantable defibrillators. He figured out how to control these pacemaker-like devices remotely and deliver an 830-volt shock to a patient’s heart. The attack showed up in the television series Homeland, when terrorists hacked the fictional vice president’s pacemaker to assassinate him. Critics called the plot far-fetched. But Jack thought the show actually made the attack seem too difficult. Others took the threat seriously, too. Years before Homeland aired, Vice President Dick Cheney had his cardiologist disable the wireless functionality in Cheney’s implanted device to avoid just such an attack…

Several manufacturers, for example, already make “smart” washers and dryers that connect wirelessly to the internet. These appliances do clever things, like automatically reordering detergent and monitoring the cost of electricity to run only when rates are low. So far, so good. But think about the risks. If our smart dryer has a security flaw, hackers might be able to access it remotely, reprogram the software to overheat the motor, and cause a fire. If even just a thousand homes in a medium-size city had a vulnerable dryer, a hacker could wreak havoc.”

4)    There are many reasons why Wifi should not be in schools, so why are the schools in BC insisting that all students be exposed to this microwave radiation?

Chloroform, Engine Exhaust, Lead, And Wireless (WiFi) Radiation Are All “Possibly Carcinogenic” — Schools Should Provide Wired Internet

Decades of scientific research on exposure to cell phone radiation, wireless (WiFi) radiation, and electrical pollution (Electrosmog) has already proven that it can worsen pre-existing conditions even if didn’t cause them.

There are many symptoms and health conditions attributed to exposure to cell phone and wireless (WiFi) radiation and electrical pollution (Electrosmog) besides increased possible cancer risk.  Some will be more affected than others.  This is true of exposure to chloroform, engine exhaust, and lead as well.

U.S. federal safety standards and guidelines were established over 20 years ago.  We are all exposed to more cell phone and wireless (WiFi) radiation and electrical pollution (Electrosmog) emitting sources than when these standards and guidelines than we were created.

20+ year old laws protect these standards and guidelines – not science…

Utility companies are NOT required to provide customers with written guidelines when they install wireless or digital “smart” meters.  This may prove problematic, especially for those who spend extended periods of time within close proximity to a utility “Smart Meter” or multiple “Smart Meters”.

Like cell phones and other wireless and electronic devices, utility “smart” meters have also been known to malfunction, catch fire, and explode.

Many believe that these utility “Smart” Meters exceed current federal safety standards which apparently don’t apply to children or pregnant women anyway.

Some scientists insist there is enough research that proves wireless (WiFi) radiation should be classified as a Group A Carcinogen.  Some scientists use current laws to defend the safety of both wireless (WiFi) radiation emitting technology and tobacco products.

This important letter is addressed to the Parties responsible for electrical safety, the performance of Corporations, including the Utilities, the supervision of Regulators and the licensing of Engineers.

I trust that the persons reading this letter will take prompt and effective action to address the shortcomings described herein and in the attached document.

I read with interest the recent reports in the Media about the attempts by SaskPower to find the best design for smart meters, and to identify the appropriate testing Standards and procedures.

Having followed the implementation of smart meters for several years, I have concerns related to the AMI including the regulation of the Utilities and the testing of digital meters.

The Public Utility Commission’s Hearings now underway in New Mexico identify many identical issues pertaining to the AMI in British Columbia. See the attached PDF file extract.

It appears that in many cases the Utility Commissions and the Power Utilities have relied upon the meter Manufacturer to verify the safety of the AMI by having the meter Manufacturer document their design of the meters, to conduct the tests and to verify the test results.

In addition, when the overall power system and AMI system are examined, it appears that there are often misunderstood and missing critical areas of responsibility, as is being uncovered in New Mexico.

These missing critical areas of responsibility have been highlighted more recently during the Hearings in New Mexico and by numerous correspondences from this writer to the Regulators, to the Professional Associations and to Government.

That there has been no adequate responses to this writer’s correspondences proves how necessary are the type of Public Hearings now occurring in New Mexico, which should have happened in Canada.

There is an urgent need to provide a Canada-wide consistency to assure Public safety of the AMI systems including identifying any required changes to:

  1. Utility Company Engineering Practices, including the stamping and the signing of engineering work, regardless of whether the work is in the Utility’s scope or the Meter Manufacturer’s scope. Detailed discussion is needed with each Provincial Engineering Association to clarify and to confirm the Utility’s responsibilities and accountability. Where no regulations exist (as in B.C.) governing the engineering work of corporations, immediate action is needed.
  2. How the delegation of responsibility to Manufacturers is properly structured,
  3. Staff technical capabilities at the Utilities Commissions when reviewing the Utilities’ complex applications,
  4. Utility power systems’ protective device applications applying to digital devices,
  5. Regulation of the Utilities as both a Public Service and as a Corporation conducting Engineering, as apparently is common in other jurisdictions.

In response to Freedom of Information requests from the Public, the Utilities have cited privacy concerns that prevented them from providing information about the protective device applications and about the testing and certification of meters, disconnect switches and devices.

There is a need to apply consistent Engineering expertise both by the purchaser and by the Utilities’ Commissions prior to and during the implementation of digital meters.

Not only should this require proper engineering examination of the impact of digital devices upon the Utility electrical power system, but also the independent meter testing, including functional testing of the disconnect switch using the most effective Standards and real-life conditions.

This has been identified by the writer and also in the New Mexico hearings as an area lacking adequate attention. There appears to be no acknowledgment or action by the Utilities that the proper engineering studies and possibly specific changes to the power system are required.

In one blatant example in New Mexico, the Utility’s spokesperson completely misunderstood the Utility’s responsibility for such studies.

Where appropriate Standards and Procedures do not meet the needs for the mass implementation of millions of meters, then much more effort must be made to assemble effective procedures, designs and testing methods to guarantee safe trouble-free service for many years.

The “Responsible Professionals” who certify and who “sign-off” on the safety of the AMI systems, the meter designs and the device testing must be able to demonstrate to the Regulators and to the Public that the content, methodology and test procedures are effective and that the pass/fail criteria are auditable.

Some of the evidence uncovered in the New Mexico Hearings points to an inadequacy of the parties to prove that their equipment has been properly and adequately tested and that the equipment is safe.

It appears that some Utility Commissions continue to accept the Utility’s data at face value and have not exercised adequate scrutiny in a technical sense to verify the safety of the AMI. These Regulators must have the necessary expertise to evaluate and to verify the accuracy and correctness of the technical content of each of the Utility’s application.

Utility Responsibilities:

With the introduction of millions of digital meters in place of analogue meters, an engineering examination of the power system protection of electrical services would seem not only appropriate but necessary and urgent.

Due to the fact that millions of meters are being changed-out, sometimes more than once, it would seem statistically obvious that problems will occur and therefore the Utility’s electrical circuit protection afforded by the high-voltage fuses is critical to detect and to isolate a failure before it develops into a life- and property-threatening event. Note that the previous Government changed the BC Electrical Safety Act to allow non-electricians to work on electrical services and do meter change-outs.

Note that a low-voltage phase-to-ground arcing fault at the customers’ service is more severe than a phase-to-phase fault, due to its intermittent but highly destructive nature. Moreover it is difficult if not impossible for the Utility’s existing primary protective device to detect and clear a destructive low-voltage arcing fault in adequate time to limit severe damage to the meter, its base and to the residence. After the introduction of millions of smart meters, this occurrence is more frequent than before and has dramatic consequences.

It remains the Utility engineers’ responsibility to apply due diligence to their work to ensure that not only are Standards adhered to but that their designs are adequate for the purpose, which may require the addition of engineering measures outside of established Standards.

There appears to be an over-reliance on minimal diligence as when many parties state that the Standards have been met, when clearly as in New Mexico, the parties have problems proving that fact. They also do not seem to subscribe to that Professional requirement that these critical systems must satisfy the “Fit for Purpose” edict as being paramount for the protection of the Public.

This critical point about complete and responsible engineering measures appears to be missing from much of the processes witnessed to date.

In some B.C. electrical incidents, there appears to be an absence of the old-style of electrical surge protection still used in analogue meters. Media articles describe voltage surges and transients that resulted in serious damage to meters and to homes (Example: Summerland, B.C.).

Tests for the meter’s ability to withstand power system voltage transients need to be realistically designed to represent real-World events, to reproduce, for example the Summerland, B.C., over-voltage incident which destroyed many smart meters and damaged homes, and left homeowners alone to deal with damaged wiring and many failed appliances. It appears that analogue meters withstood this event without damage far better than digital meters.

The Utility must be able to provide independent documented evidence to the Regulators and to the Public that the electrical service installations are safe, and prove that when an electrical failure occurs, as is more common during and since the mass implementation of digital meters, that the Utilities’ protective device operates effectively to limit the risk to the residents and damage to homes.

The absence of evidence of hazard is not proof of safety”—says Dr. Devra Davis

Cell Tower study on Health posted Mar 23/18

1)    Partial results are being reported on the 10 year cell tower study done in Italy by the Ramazzini Institute where rats were exposed to levels of RF which are similar to levels in our environment. They confirm the 10 year study by NTP, and the researchers are calling for a review of the IARC classification of microwave radiation as a possible carcinogen. And with microcells, smeters, wifi hot spots etc. the level of RF in our environment is increasing rapidly.

“Our findings of cancerous tumors in rats exposed to environmental levels of RF are consistent with and reinforce the results of the US NTP studies on cell phone radiation, as both reported increases in the same types of tumors of the brain and heart in Sprague-Dawley rats. Together, these studies provide sufficient evidence to call for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to re-evaluate and re-classify their conclusions regarding the carcinogenic potential of RFR in humans,” said Fiorella Belpoggi PhD, study author and RI Director of Research…

“All of the exposures used in the Ramazzini study were below the US FCC limits. These are permissible exposures according the FCC. In other words, a person can legally be exposed to this level of radiation. Yet cancers occurred in these animals at these legally permitted levels. The Ramazzini findings are consistent with the NTP study demonstrating these effects are a reproducible finding,” explained Ronald Melnick PhD, formerly the Senior NIH toxicologist who led the design of the NTP study on cell phone radiation now a Senior Science Advisor to Environmental Health Trust (EHT). “Governments need to strengthen regulations to protect the public from these harmful non-thermal exposures.”,,,

“The evidence indicating wireless is carcinogenic has increased and can no longer be ignored,” stated University of Toronto Dalla Lana School of Public Health Professor Emeritus Anthony B. Miller MD, Member of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of Canada and the UK, and Senior Medical Advisor to EHT who is also a long-term advisor to the World Health Organization.

“This study raises concerns that simply living close to a cell tower will pose threats to human health. Governments need to take measures to reduce exposures from cell tower emissions. Cell towers should not be near schools, hospitals or people’s homes. Public health agencies need to educate the public on how to reduce exposure from all sources of wireless radiofrequency radiation—be it from cell towers or cell phones or Wi-Fi in schools,” stated David O. Carpenter MD, former Dean of the School of Public Health at the University at Albany. “This is particularly urgent because of current plans to place small 5G cell towers about every 300 meters in every street across the country. These 5G ‘small cell’ antennas will result in continuous exposure to everyone living nearby and everyone walking down the street. The increased exposures will increase risk of cancer and other diseases such as electro-hypersensitivity.””

3)    A couple of good 2 min. youtubes showing that use of airtubes is the only way to listen to music or talk with a “smart” phone, or cell phone. Earbuds or headphones will shoot radiation straight into the brain.  The “smart” or cell phone will still be emitting radiation, so it should not be placed in a pocket or laid in the lap while using the airtubes. Move the phone as far from the body as possible.

If you listen to music through your smart phone, this happens to your brain

“Has it ever occurred to you that while using headphones to listen to music through your smartphone, you might be radiating your brain? Unfortunately that thought occurred to me, and I did some research and found out that yes in fact, listening to music with your smartphone and headphones is likely to harm you.

According to RF Safe, an organization that has conducted research on radiation claims that EMF radiation travels straight through the wire of a wired headset directly from the headphone jack to the ear, penetrating a person’s head through the ear canal. They say this increases radiation exposure to a person’s brain by 300%.”

EMF sensitivities supported in USA posted Mar 18/18

1)    In the US there is an organization whose goal is helping people with environmental sensitivities live in a safe home.  A very interesting group of people on their board.

2)    In Maine, electricity bills are increasing dramatically. Are smeters to blame?  Unless there is independent testing no one will know. The utilities there, like Hydro, “offer” to take the smeter into their pristine lab to test and, of course, the smeters always are just fine.  Electrical engineers have said that these smeters are cheap computers and, like other computers, reboot when removed from the base. Their settings revert to factory settings. Any problems will disappear. They need to be tested in their base where they are, to test for interference among other things.

Time for Action on Outages, High Bills

“But this is not the most severe winter ever, so some huge increases seem to be caused by more than usage. CMP, for example, has removed the prior year’s monthly usage from the bill, making ready comparisons impossible. That deletion makes it more difficult to accept the explanation that it’s all a matter of usage.

One obvious culprit is the meter. Utilities have installed so-called “smart” meters, supposedly because they will allow customers to manage their usage better, obtaining greater efficiency and lower costs. While that promise mostly goes unfulfilled, it has worked well for utilities that can eliminate meter reader jobs.

During a major, recent nor’easter, smart meters turned out to be dumb. They could not highlight outage locations very well, nor did they provide good data to the central office, which would help it efficiently assign repair crews. Despite their shortcomings, a big part of the meter’s cost is recovered in a customer’s rates and will be for many years.”

3)    Groups are organizing all over the US to fight the loss of control of public rights of way and the right to negotiate siting of microcells.  This from Virginia.  We need to organize rallies and protests outside MLA/MP constituency offices to make our voices and concerns heard.

“If either bill becomes law, telecommunication companies will have the right to place cell antennas on every utility pole.  Right now they are installed on cell towers or building roofs.  The result is your home will likely be subjected to wireless radiation day and night, and the antenna could be right outside your bedroom window. Your ability to escape wireless radiation will disappear in Virginia.”

6)    Below in letters is additional information about disabling Shaw’s wifi’d modem, provided by one of our technical members.

My old non wireless modem failed  after less than 5 years.  Phoned shaw and arranged to pickup a new one. Unfortunately all new shaw modems are wifi equipped.   Had a bit of a tussle with the service rep on the matter when I told him that my turning the wifi off at home was not good enough as I knew for firmware updates and software updates they make take everything back to the defaults with the wireless on.  Finally he told me I could ask for the modem to be in bridge modem  which you have to ask for and they can do at the office.  So far the new modem does not seem to be transmitting but I have noticed the power supply is much dirtier and has an appreciable reading.

I assume all ISP have the ability to disable  the wifi  permanently if you ask for it – it may take a bit of words to get them to do it but I assume it is possible with all of the providers.

From a security from hacking perspective the new modem has a feature I will not use and recommend no one else does either. My old modem had only 1 ethernet (wired) connection  the new modem/router has 4.  One should never use more than 1 connection (yes connecting several home routers would be okay but why would you) to the ISP supplied modem and if more wired connections are needed use a home router.  One may still be able to find  a home router that does not radiate  (usually a few $ cheaper). If only witless enabled ones are available  make sure when you buy it  you know how to turn the wireless off not all will let you turn it off, if in doubt ask the store to show you how.  Only plug you computer(s) into your home router  never the ISP supplied modem. Using  a home router will increase you computer security but you still need  a firewall.

I recommend using both the operating system supplied firewall and a separate one as hackers all know the way past  the operating system firewall  A  separate firewall from some random source makes the work of the hacker harder  as they have to get past the impediment of the home router, the complexities of the system firewall and then be versed on the complexities of you own firewall,  most will give up and go for low hanging fruit and bother some other computer instead.  This also will stymie the script hackers that use a purchased script to enslave hundreds or thousands of computers at a time.

Changing the private network address on one’s home router is also a good plan and there are additional tweaks depending on the router one can do to enhance security.

Each layer of security also adds a layer of complexity for the user and uses a bit of computer power so I do not recommend more than I mentioned here  which will probably not impact ones computer use too much.

If you follow these recommendations it is relatively unlikely your computer will be hacked – no guarantees.

There is one point I forgot to mention. For most it will make no difference  but for super fast gamers  if one wants fast connection speeds they will need to buy the more expensive  home routers at 100+ if they want Gigabit connection speeds. My old and probably most other people’s home router is 1/10 that and works well enough for me to watch movies on my computer – gave up on tv over a year and don’t miss it.  My connection is fast enough to watch 2 youtube movies simultaneously.

Also for those on a budget my Shaw connection is an old grandfathered connection that is about half the speed of the ones they offer now and much cheaper than their new victim price.

For those concerned about connection speed there are 3 pinchpoints a user can control

  1. most computers of the last 10 years are good for the maximum speed of 1 Gigabit and at this time there are no faster connections available
  2. Unless one pays a premium their router is only good for a 10th the speed the computer is.  Unless I had 5 or 6 computers on the internet simultaneously or a gaming enthusiast the low price router is all one needs.  If one looks around they will find a router for less than $20

3 Ones internet connection – the more you pay the faster the connection but no sense paying for a faster connection than your router can handle Most homes probably don’t need more than the lowest price options they can get.  Don’t let your service providers talk you into a higher priced package if your home router/modem/computer are the pinch points, you will receive no benefit other than having less money to worry about.

Education on dangers of WIFI and phones posted Mar 15/18 ( I would like to say there are mind control programs on phones to get your addicted Tami)

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

Due to my being ill, there was no update on March. 13.

1)    This article could be useful for those who want to get family members or friends to reduce time on “smart” phones, and fear of cancer isn’t doing it.

This is what your smartphone is doing to your brain — and it isn’t good

“But our bodies have a different view: These constant alerts jolt our stress hormones into action, igniting our flight or flight response; our heartbeats quicken, our breathing tightens, our sweat glands burst open, and our muscles contract. That response is intended to help us outrun danger, not answer a call or text from a colleague…

Brand new research on dozens of smartphone users in Switzerland also suggests that staring at our screens could be making both our brains and our fingers more jittery…

Checking Facebook has been proven to make young adults depressed. Researchers who’ve studied college students’ emotional well-being find a direct link: the more often people check Facebook, the more miserable they are.”

2)    Childhood cancers and autism are rising… And many studies show a significant environmental toxin is microwave radiation.  Too bad this article made no mention of it.

Childhood Cancers Rising Same as Autism – Cancer Now #1 Cause of Death in Children

For American children ages one through 14, cancer is the top disease-related cause of death, second only to accidents among all causes of childhood mortality. Leukemia and malignancies of the central nervous system are the most common types of childhood cancers.

A recent opinion piece in The Hill points out that autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have increased in lockstep with pediatric cancers.

One in thirty-six (2.76%) children aged three-17 had an ASD diagnosis as of 2016, compared to one in 10,000 children in the 1970s. The parallel rise in the two conditions is not a fluke—environmental toxins are widely known to “initiate or aggravate various neurological disorders [and] carcinomas.”

3)    More reasons for having power lines underground. Why spend all the money replacing poles, repairing damages that cause outages, etc. when putting lines underground provides safer means of providing electricity that is less vulnerable to accident or weather.

4)    Some good news from New York where people rallied after learning that the state budget included provisions weakening local control of right of ways, leading the way for 5G cell transmitters. In a very short time, public pressure has forced the “gutting” of this portion of the budget in the first chamber (the Assembly). Now they are preparing to put pressure on the Senate. This shows that organized effort can make a difference. It’s good to read about how they did it in case there’s some ideas we can used.  Interesting that telecom Spectrum opposed this, too, because they are invested in using fiber optic cable.

“TED VII Part F- change to general municipal law that would have gutted local zoning and planning for 5G towers on municipal rights of way on utility poles and college campuses/ sporting arenas is GONE from Assembly version; however, we still need to deal with Senate version and the combined version so we are not home free yet, but this is a MAJOR POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT!

Please call (518) 455 Senators Boyle (3411) , Robach (2909), Flanagan (2071) and DeFrancisco (3511) to weigh in this week against TED VII Part F)

Full Budget

I was up in Albany lobbying with leadership yesterday and the word came down at 5:30 that they were going to take it out of the Assembly’s version, which was published today.

This is an ongoing joint effort by all concerned parties.  First, Alissa Shields of Erie County found out about this budget provision, recognized the implications and informed people on February 28th.  Also Marilynne Martin of Florida (formerly of Long Island) has been telling other New Yorkers about this.

The various conferences of mayors and supervisors, including Orange County, around the state have been weighing in.  A couple of Assemblypeople were former mayors, like Steve Otis (Westchester) and John McDonald (Capitol Region) so they understand first-hand the importance of home rule and pressed this upon leadership.

Spectrum is also opposed to this because they have invested in non-radiation emitting wired cable infrastructure and don’t want the competition of 5G wireless tv being beamed in from poles into peoples’ homes.

Supervisor Bob Livsey and the Town of Highlands Town Board issued a strongly worded resolution, which can be used as a template for municipalities going forward as 5G purveyors try to do business there.

Grassroots Environmental Education produced www.TelecomPowerGrab.org and other literature and did a PR Blitz of major newspapers.

Of course, it helps that NYCOM (NY Conference of Mayors) has threatened to sue the State of New York if they pass this, although I understand that Governor Cuomo was unmoved by this comment.

Again, vigilance is required on the Senate side.  And going forward, all need to be concerned about increasing radiation in homes, offices and public places.  As stated, Lennart Hardell, whose work was the basis for the WHO/IARC Group 2b carcinogenicity determination, has sent an appeal with fellow scientists to the EU calling for a moratorium on 5G and calling it a violation of the Nuremberg Code.  They are also calling for this radiation to be regulated as a 1A carcinogen based on evidence which exists.

(The young aides who sat in on meetings with members in Albany had never heard of the Nuremberg Code…. which is concerning from an education standpoint……)

Subject: Re: BC Hydro’s meter choices program

Dear Minister,

Thank you for your time on this not quite considerate answer as you used a template inherited from previous government.

I thought in BC it is not quite practical while popular to use the term fairness while every tenth child in is living poverty and hunger.

BC Hydro used the least secure, and least safe infrastructure, and paid the most for it – the highest on a per meter basis in North America.

At the time when your quoted document was compiled BCUC had no control of what liberal government conspired within “Clean Energy Act”: all was based on closed doors arbitrarily made decisions. Do not you know yet that CEA was designed to wipe out any analogue meter, to leave no choice to opponents while their seal are “expired”?

So you say it is fair to leave people with no option, or say staged to expire “option” with the penalty “fee” that many could not afford?  For many this “fee” is higher than actual energy consumption, does it make sense?

How do you see a fairness and balance while people who do not drive pay taxes for roads, people who do not have children pay taxes for schools, people who have property and have no children pay taxes for schools while those who rent and use public education system do not pay any taxes for schools infrastructure?

Do we all subsidize BC Ferry, ICBC, Translink itself while not all use it?

BC Hydro never disclosed the rationale behind their charging us the highest reading fee in entire N. America. How they can justify financially that “These fees enable BC Hydro to cover the cost of meter reading”?

“Rates are set based on the cost of service.” BCH never disclosed actual cost and what they do with this money collected.

Wireless AMI (Advanced Meter Infrastructure) is the least green smart meter and actually is not green technology at all. BC Hydro chose the least reliable, safe, and green path.

“BC Hydro supports energy conservation efforts for all customers” Do they really?

I need to conclude that you are perfectly repeating words of previous liberal “leaders”. And while you did not back up your words with anything I would dare say that NDP is set to continue the outrageous meter reading fee collection for its private interests.

Fairness and balance come when there is a dialogue and trust between communicating parties. We had none in BC as to AMI. If BCH, BCUC, and government wanted to serve people they would trust them using a balanced approach. In particular home owners could read their meters and submit readings via the Internet based application.

BCH could confirm accurate reading with checks once a year or so, if they trusted us. In reality they’d love us trusting them while BCH gave us no reason to.

You even did not dare to make a comparison of BC Hydro to IDAHO Power business cases.

For the sake of those of us who oppose unsafe and ineffective way BCH was allowed to choose wireless smart meters, spend a of couple minutes reading the IDAHO Power case. It is an obvious opportunity to correct all BCH/liberal wrongdoing with choosing Itron wireless AMI.

Do that favour for all people in BC including your family.

And how come Adrian Dix press release as to meter reading fees appeared to be another lie?

Did NDP forget their promise to be honest with British Columbians?

  1. Coleman is probably proud of you.

Mr. Michael V

Dear Mr. V

Thank you for your February 15, 2018 email regarding BC Hydro’s meter choices program legacy fees, and for taking the time to write and share your views.

In British Columbia, energy utilities are regulated by the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC).  Rates are set based on the cost of service.  The fees and charges related to BC Hydro’s meter choices program were reviewed and approved by the BCUC.  A copy of BCUC’s decision can be found at http://www.bcuc.com/Documents/Proceedings/2014/DOC_41266_04-25-2014_BCH%20Meter%20Choices_Decision_G-59-14.pdf.

We understand that some customers continue to have concerns about the monthly fee for retaining a legacy meter.  Their concerns, however, must be balanced with fairness to other customers.  Fairness suggests customers who choose to retain a legacy meter instead of accepting the standard meter in British Columbia should cover the costs associated with their choice.  These fees enable BC Hydro to cover the cost of meter reading and the cost of the additional infrastructure needed for the smart grid to operate around the non‑communicating meters, including the cost of maintaining the old system.

BC Hydro supports energy conservation efforts for all customers.  Details regarding a variety of opportunities to save and obtain rebates, including those opportunities available to customers who choose to retain a legacy meter, are available online at https://www.bchydro.com/powersmart/residential/savings-and-rebates.html.

Once again, thank you for writing.  I appreciate the opportunity to hear from you about these important issues.  It helps inform my work within the Ministry, and your engagement is crucial to our democracy.

Shaw Wifi treachery example! posted Mar 13/18

Written and shared by Sharon Noble, Director, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters www.stopsmartmetersbc.com

1)    I had internet problems that prevented me from using my computer until this evening and through this experience I’ve learned something you should know.  We use Shaw and have always had a wired router, having the wireless capability turned off by Shaw.  You might have a modem if you only have one computer hooked up. We have a router that serves both Dennis’s and my computer. This morning our router was dead, so Dennis took it to Shaw for a replacement. The woman there looked at our file, saw that we do not use wireless access and said she had turned it off. Dennis came home, hooked everything up, but only his computer worked. I called Shaw and was told that wired routers allowed only 1 connection, the others had to be wireless. I objected and said we had always had 3 wired ports, two for our computers and another for our homeplug which allows us to use Netflix, streaming, etc on our TV. After a lot of back and forth, the fellow eventually agreed to allow 3 ports to be active on a wired router.  He worked for perhaps 20 min before saying he had managed to do it. I hung up, went to my computer and turned on my HF Analyzer to see if all was ok — it went crazy. The wifi was on full blast. I called Shaw again, and after about an hour of back and forth convinced the techies that this could and must be done. Finally I was given a way to turn off the wifi myself and to check to see if it had come on again, which can happen if there is some factory reset.  Go to google, and on the line with the URL, instead of a www address type in and hit enter. The login box shows and the password is the serial number on your modem or router. Then a page comes up for the 2 frequencies that Shaw uses, 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz.  Go into each and disable the wifi.

I’m sure that each provider has the same ability to give you a way to ensure that your wifi is disabled.

I believe the Shaw people just took the easy way out and figured we’d never know we had wifi. Not unlike Telus…

2)    Warning re. hackers, especially for those using a WordPress website, blog, etc.  Everyone needs good anti-virus protection and to keep it updated. This type of hacking could eventually damage a computer.

‘Cryptojacking’ hacker trend turns Canadian web surfers into cryptocurrency miners

“Segura said what’s striking about this latest trend is that it affects virtually any kind of device that can access a website. In the past, many consumers thought they were safe from viruses and malware on their mobile phones or Apple computers.

“It’s platform agnostic in the sense that it doesn’t matter if you have a Windows computer, or a Mac, or even a mobile device, if you’re visiting that website your device will start mining regardless,” he said.

He added there is a possible risk of damage to an overworked device if it were to be left mining endlessly for an extended period of time.”

3)    An attorney in Seattle is fighting to have smeters banned. He has written an extremely long demand to the Utilities Commission (I must admit to reading less than half!)

“The Coalition opposes so-called advanced meters and points out their defects, the physical harms they cause, the damage they cause to property, their failure economically, their eavesdropping and surveillance capabilities, and their failure to qualify according existing regulations. So-called advanced meters and all electronic meters are a Consumer Protection Act case waiting to happen.”

4)    Finally, 2 years after “phonegate” was revealed, where it was learned that many cell phones tested in Europe emit higher levels of RF than allowed, the data has been released.  Dr. Arazi will review the 20,000 pages and report on the results.  As Wendy Mesley reported, cell phones in No. America are not tested realistically and people are exposed to extremely high levels of RF – probably, at times, exceeding even the very high limits allowed by Safety Code 6.

Phonegate : A new victory in our fight for transparency against ANFR

In the fight for transparency, it is a new victory against ANFR which, using multiple arguments, has repeatedly refused to make public these data that are essential to the health and safety of mobile phone users.  For Dr. Marc Arazi who launched the alert on this new health and industrial scandal:  “This is an important major victory but now the French and European people must be fully informed and governments must take measures of protection, in particular, ordering the removal of mobile phones that exceed the thresholds in contact with the body.  The inertia of Ministers Nicolas Hulot and Agnès Buzyn is no longer acceptable. »…

Mr. Arnaud Durant, lawyer at the Paris Bar who is closely following this case, wishes to react :  “The ‘alleged’ conformity advanced by ANFR for these mobile phones absolutely does not take into account the question of the existence of a possible safety flaw.  In European law, a product is defective when it does not offer the safety that the consumer can legitimately expect.   What other use can one reasonably expect from a ‘mobile’ phone?   One certainly expects to be able to hold it against the cheek, in the hand, or even in a pocket, but certainly not to be subjected to a situation where the thresholds are being exceeded or a specific health risk such as the risk of carcinogenesis.”

Here is the press release in English.

5)    A letter in a Montana paper about smeters being installed through threats, deception, without notice. If correct, there is a higher opt out fee — $75 – reported. I will check this out and will let you know if, in fact, this is true. Until I confirm, we are still # 1 in opt out fees !!

Are smart meters installed without consent?

“Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative (YVEC) has installed new AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) “smart” utility meters without our informed consent. AMI Smart Meters could be an invasion of privacy and also a cyber-security threat. They are associated with a host of health conditions, and catch on fire and explode more easily due to their design.

YVEC has operated under a veil of secrecy and deception concerning these meters. For example, the manager of YVEC adamantly claimed that they did not use any government funding to install these surveillance capable devices. However, legal discovery documents show that YVEC did take government funding to deploy the Smart Grid and Smart Meters.”

6)    And now for a change of pace :  The Muppets explain why they don’t want cell towers in their yards.

Recent Successes and What’s in Store for Organic Industry in 2018
By Dr. Mercola

Story at-a-glance

  • At present, there are 457 million acres of GMO crops growing around the world. The good news is this GMO acreage has remained largely unchanged for the last three years

  • This lack of growth is undoubtedly a reflection of growing consumer awareness about GMOs and the toxic chemicals that accompany them

  • In the U.S., the organic food and products sector has grown to $50 billion a year and the certified non-GMO sector is now at $30 billion annually

  • We now face a new generation of GMOs, which are likely even more dangerous than the first generation of glyphosate-resistant and Bt-producing crops released in 1996

  • The organic industry is also slowly introducing the next-gen in organics – regenerative organics, also known as biodynamic farming, which has far stricter rules than USDA organics. New grass fed certification rules are also being implemented

Our annual GMO Awareness Week is upon us, and in this interview, Ronnie Cummins, executive director and cofounder of the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) details the current state of the opposition to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). A lot has happened since last year’s campaign.

At present, there are 457 million acres of GMO crops growing around the world according to the genetic engineering (GE) industry. That’s about 10 percent of the 4 billion acres of cropland in the world. The good news is this GMO acreage has remained largely unchanged for the last three years. There’s even some evidence of a slight decline. This lack of growth is undoubtedly a reflection of growing consumer awareness about GMOs and the toxic chemicals that accompany them.

Organic Sector Is Growing

Evidence of growing consumer awareness and concern about chemical hazards can also be seen in the growth of the organic and grass fed sectors. In the U.S., the organic food and products sector has grown to $50 billion a year and the certified non-GMO sector is now at $30 billion annually.

It’s a healthy section in the marketplace that is not genetically engineered, and it’s growing,” Cummins says. “In response to consumer demand, more and more farmers are moving away from GMO crops in the U.S., either planting less or making the transition to non-GMO and organic [as] consumers are becoming aware of the fact that GMOs are really just delivery systems for toxic pesticides.

The whole reason why Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow, DuPont and the rest are patenting and manufacturing GMO seeds is so they can sell their proprietary pesticides. There’s no such thing as a GMO crop that’s not accompanied by toxic herbicides or insecticides. They’re also always accompanied by massive amounts of chemical fertilizers.

[GMOs] are primarily grown to feed animals on factory farms and to produce ethanol or biodiesel. Animals in factory farms that are eating the GMOs with the pesticide residues in them are also being injected with or consuming antibiotics and other veterinary drugs to keep them alive under those hellish conditions. All in all, it doesn’t add up to a very attractive thing for consumers. That’s the reason why this first generation of GMO crops is leveling off.”

New Generation of GMOs Coming to Market

Unfortunately, we now face a new generation of GMOs, and they may be even more dangerous than the first generation of glyphosate-resistant and Bt-producing crops released in 1996. Glyphosate-resistant GE plants are designed to withstand otherwise lethal doses of Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides, whereas Bt crops are engineered to produce their own insecticide — Bacillus thuringiensis — internally, inside each cell of the plant.

While these traits were touted as a godsend for farmers, the promise of weed-free fields didn’t pan out as promised. Instead, chemical-resistant superweeds and superbugs rapidly developed, necessitating the use of more and more chemicals to keep them in check. The illogical and ultimately devastating answer provided by the chemical technology industry is a new generation of crops engineered to withstand more toxic chemical combinations, such as 2,4-D and dicamba-resistant crops.

With the release of these next-gen crops, the devastation was near-immediate and undisputable. Dicamba is extremely toxic and prone to drift. It’s nearly impossible to apply it properly and avoid damaging non-target areas. Almost immediately, farmers started reporting severe crop damage caused by drift, and it quickly became apparent that the only way to avoid such damage is to grow dicamba-resistant crops.

By late September last year, 368 complaints had been filed in Illinois,1 and Iowa had received 258 reports — a “record number” – by early September.2 Farmers in Arkansas reported the same problem. The damage was so extensive, a number of states, including Arkansas, Missouri and Mississippi, imposed temporary bans on the use of dicamba-containing pesticides last summer.3 In all, more than 3 million acres in the U.S. suffered dicamba damage last year.4

September 10, 2017, the law firm Morgan & Morgan filed a class-action lawsuit5 against Monsanto, BASF and DuPont, the three largest manufacturers of dicamba-based herbicide formulations in the U.S., alleging dicamba “is highly volatile and can travel considerable distances and cause injuries to plants several miles away,” and that dicamba makers “deceptively marketed their latest dicamba formulations as ‘low-volatility’ herbicides that would not be as prone to off-target movement.”

California to Require Cancer Warning for Roundup

Despite such ongoing struggles, other victories have been achieved. Early last year, a California judge decreed Roundup must indeed carry a cancer warning label in order to be sold in the state. Ever since the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a research arm of the World Health Organization, reclassified glyphosate as a “probable carcinogen” (Class 2A), there has been tremendous debate and upheaval in the world.

The IARC’s decision was based on “limited evidence” showing the weed killer can cause Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and lung cancer in humans, along with “convincing evidence” linking it to cancer in animals.

“… Monsanto ,the biotechnology industry and certain members of U.S. Congress … are trying everything they can to prevent the implementation of this law. But it’s very unlikely they’re going to be able to prevent California Proposition 65 from going into effect, because it’s a very clear law. It’s been on the books since 1986. Glyphosate, the Roundup residue, meets the criteria … [so] it looks like California is going to go forward with the designation of Roundup as a carcinogen.”

Chemical Technology Industry Fails to Regain Popularity

California’s cancer warning on Roundup is expected to be implemented next year. Warning labels will not necessarily be required on food, unless they meet a certain threshold of contamination, but signage will be required anywhere Roundup is sold and used, such as in hardware stores, feed stores and in and around agricultural fields.

It’s going to be a big black eye for Monsanto,” Cummins says. “That’s one of the reasons they’re starting to market a new generation of Frankencrops such as dicamba-resistant seeds …

[T]he controversy around Monsanto – probably the most hated corporation in the world – is also hampering Bayer Chemical’s attempt to buy out Monsanto for $66 billion. They’ve having great difficulties, especially in the European Union, around that. But I think Monsanto and the rest of the genetic engineering industry recognize that this first generation of crops are no longer working.

The weeds are developing resistance to Roundup. Consumers are getting aware of the fact that Roundup residues damage your health. It’s come out that the Bt crops are also not working – the pests they’re supposed to kill are developing resistance. Also, Bt damages your immune system

Monsanto and Dow have developed a new generation of 2,4-D and dicamba-resistant seeds and crops but these are even more controversial in the marketplace. Dicamba has damaged thousands of farmers’ crops. It’s even banned right now in Arkansas. It spreads throughout the environment and kills any plant that’s not genetically engineered dicamba-resistant. These crops are not working either.”

Dicamba and 2,4-D Have Long Been Known To Be Too Toxic to Use

Ironically, when Roundup Ready crops were brought to market in ’96, one of the justifications for the use of Roundup was that older pesticides such as 2,4-D (an ingredient in Agent Orange, a chemical warfare agent used with devastating effect during the Vietnam War) and dicamba were simply too dangerous, both to the environment and human health.

Meanwhile, Roundup was claimed to be biodegradable and nontoxic. Now that Roundup has been shown to be far from benign, causing chemical resistance in weeds, antibiotic-resistance in soil and damaging human health, the industry’s answer is to reintroduce the very chemicals previously discarded as being far too toxic to use! Clearly, they did not magically lose their toxicity over the past 20 years, yet the industry is pretending as if none of these concerns ever existed.

Even farmers who would normally be pro-chemical or pro-biotech have been suing Monsanto, because when their neighbors spray dicamba, it kills everything around it,” Cummins says. “Monsanto likes to claim [they’ve] got this new formulation that is not as volatile [and] doesn’t travel as far under ordinary conditions. But that’s just not true.

It just shows that, in their desperation, they’re going to – in the case of dicamba – force every farmer to use it or else their crops are going to be killed by it. I think it’s going to be a hard sell for both dicamba and 2,4-D, especially with consumers becoming more aware of the fact that, for certain pesticides, there are no safe levels at all. We’ve simply must get rid of these pesticides.”

Strategic Plan for 2018

So, what’s the plan for reversing the spread of GMOs in 2018? Here’s a rundown of OCA’s strategy:

OCA will continue to provide funding to the U.S. Right to Know organization (USRTK) which, while independent from OCA, has done a masterful job of creating media coverage about the dangers of Roundup residues and pesticides in general. Also, through freedom of information act filings, USRTK has exposed a number of deeply damaging truths about the industry’s use of academics to promote a corporate agenda while pretending to be independent experts.

OCA will also continue educating consumers about the fact that GMOs are really just delivery systems for pesticides (i.e., their primary cause for being is to increase pesticide sales), and that the only way to avoid dangerous pesticide residues and GMOs is to buy organic food, both when shopping for your daily groceries and when eating out.

As noted by Cummins, evidence suggests there’s really no safe level for Roundup, so the fact that it’s the most commonly used pesticide in the world poses significant problems for public health. French researchers have demonstrated that even at 0.1 parts per billion, glyphosate – the active ingredient in Roundup – severely damages the health of lab animals.

Glyphosate is detected in the urine of 70 to 80 percent of Americans right now (including some who eat mostly organic food) and is found in 90 percent of water samples. On the whole, glyphosate appears to be a significant contributor and driver of chronic disease, and anyone concerned about their long-term health cannot afford to ignore the potential impact of glyphosate any longer.

This year, OCA will also ramp up independent lab testing of nonorganic products claiming to be “all-natural,” “natural,” “eco-friendly,” “free-range,” “grass fed,” and so on. As noted by Cummins, “There’s a huge fraud going on in the marketplace. Big food companies understand that consumers want organic … 57 percent of American consumers say they know that organic food is superior …

It’s against the law for them to call it organic unless it’s certified, but they’re using terminology … to convince consumers that if … it says all-natural, that means it’s just about like organic, but it’s a lot cheaper.” OCA estimates there are up to $400 billion worth of fraudulently labeled food in supermarkets across the U.S. This includes meat, dairy products, eggs and processed foods. OCA is sending samples of these products to independent labs for testing, to ascertain what’s really in them.

Ben & Jerry’s Still in the Hot Seat

Two of the most heinous deceivers out there are Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and Sanderson Farms (the only chicken producer that obstinately refuses to even consider reducing its use of antibiotics). Ben & Jerry’s has since the very beginning presented itself as a company built on environmental values and all-natural ideals. Yet, testing of their products reveal they’re not so natural after all. It’s all just a well-crafted façade.

When we look at [Ben & Jerry’s products], we’re finding Roundup residues in them, both in the United States and in Europe, where we’ve tested all of Ben & Jerry’s most popular ice cream brands,” Cummins says. “We’re also [assessing] the damage their dairy suppliers are doing to the environment, which is a disaster in Vermont and other areas. They’re basically factory farm-supplied, pesticide-intensive operations, where the cows are not grazing out on pasture.

They’re eating GE corn and grains. It’s showing up in the products. Since August, we have staged demonstrations and press conferences. We’ve done extensive testing. We’ve exposed the fact that Ben & Jerry’s is a fraud. Ben & Jerry’s is owned by Unilever (the third largest food corporation in the world).

We’ve told Ben & Jerry’s and Unilever, ‘If you want to get back in the good graces of consumers, because you’re quickly losing your reputation, you need to go organic as quickly as possible. Get those cows grazing on pasture, not eating GE corn sprayed with Roundup and atrazine.’

They have agreed to make nominal changes so far. Unilever announced in October – when we exposed their European brands as being contaminated with Roundup – [that] in 2018, 7 to 8 percent of their production will be organic. They said by the year 2020, two years from now, none of their added ingredients — wheat, chocolate and so on — will be sprayed with Roundup. They’re going to basically clean up their act over time.

But, we’ve seen Unilever’s behavior in the past. It’s easy to make promises. It’s easy to make nominal changes in your production, but we’re not letting up. We’re continuing to test their products for other contaminants. We’re continuing to work with people who are exposing the environmental damage they’re doing …

Roundup use in Vermont has doubled over the last few years. In large part due to the fact that all the corn nonorganic dairy farms feed their cows is genetically engineered. So, their brand image is being tarnished.”

OCA Takes Legal Action to Stop Deceptive Marketing Practices

As reported in previous articles, Sanderson Farms claims the antibiotic-free trend is nothing but a marketing ploy devised to justify higher prices. This, despite the overwhelming scientific evidence showing this routine practice is a major driver of antibiotic-resistant disease, which is already killing an estimated 23,000 Americans each year.

OCA is presently in negotiations with Sanderson Farms to cease and desist their false advertising. OCA has also taken legal action against General Mills, as their so-called natural granola bar, Nature’s Valley, is contaminated with Roundup, as well as baby food companies like Earth’s Best, which claims their baby food is organic even though it contains ingredients prohibited in organics.

What we’re seeing across the board is that if companies are challenged in court – and in the court of public opinion – over their false advertising, they’ll realize at some point that they’re going to lose. They’re already losing their reputation. They will either go organic or they will stop claiming that their stuff is natural, all-natural or other misleading terms that are out there.

There’s a lot of meat being called grass fed that’s not grass fed. There’s a lot of beef that has labels on it that say ‘Product of the U.S.A.’ when it’s importedCompanies are resorting to fraud in their labeling and advertising because they understand that consumers want organic and they want grass fed. Until they can provide that, the only way to keep their profits up is to mislead consumers.”

Next-Gen Organics

While the chemical technology industry is rolling out their next-gen GMOs, the organic industry is slowly introducing the next-gen in organics – regenerative organics, many of the principles of which are embodied in biodynamic farming. Organic dairy products are certainly better than conventional factory farmed products, but just because something is certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) doesn’t mean the cows are 100 percent grass fed, as they should be.

Research shows there are clear nutritional differences between herbivores (such as cows) that are fed grain, especially pesticide-contaminated GE grain, and animals fed a wholly natural diet of grass. The American Grassfed Association and others have pioneered standards for grass fed beef. We’re now also starting to see those standards being applied to dairy products, and we’re starting to see 100 percent grass fed organic milk and yogurt products. Cummins adds:

Across the board, we’ve always had Grade A and Grade B organics. A lot of consumers haven’t fully understood this, but they’re starting to. Biodynamic organic is the higher (A) grade. The way farms are certified under biodynamic is much stricter than the normal USDA organic. It’s been great to move from chemical agriculture, factory farms and GMOs into a situation where organic is a powerhouse now – it’s over 10 percent of all produce

But we need to take it to the next step, where we focus on organics and traditional principles where you have to improve the soil every year on a continuous basis. You need to pay attention to soil health if you’re going to have optimum nutrition.

Now, people have also realized that … we can actually reverse climate change by making the soil healthier; producing plants that have a supercharged photosynthesis that actually suck down the excess carbon from the atmosphere and put it in the soil where it used to be.

Regenerative organic and regenerative food farming and land use, they’re starting to catch on. It appears it’s going to be a global phenomenon that’s going to make organic move from being just a niche market to where, in 10 years, the majority of food is going to be grown organically and regeneratively.”

Be Part of the Change

Ultimately, regenerative food and farming is the end goal. We not only want to identify and expose market fraud and deception, which the OCA does quite well, but we also want to encourage, inspire and catalyze the transition to regenerative agriculture practices that has stronger standards, such as those developed by the American Grassfed Association and Demeter, the latter of which provides biodynamic certification.
